📌 Key answer (checked Oct 28, 2026)
For cracked, peeling or sensitive winter lips, Aquaphor Lip Repair is the safer and cheaper pick: it is fragrance-free and costs $4.33 for a 0.35 fl oz tube on Amazon US. Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask ($24 for a 20 g jar) makes more sense for lips that are dry but not damaged, if you like a scented, glossy bedtime step.
Per ounce, Laneige costs about 2.8x more ($34.02/oz vs $12.37/fl oz), and up to about 4.5x more if you catch the Aquaphor 2-pack deal. Neither has SPF.

Cold wind outside, dry heating inside, and suddenly your lips sting every time you smile. Winter is when the "Laneige or Aquaphor?" question shows up in every comment section.
One is a $24 Korean lip mask in a cute pink jar that sells, according to Laneige, one unit every two seconds. The other is a $4 drugstore tube that dermatologists keep mentioning. This guide compares price per ounce, ingredients, fragrance, ratings and the right use for each, so you can decide whether the Korean lip mask is worth the extra money.
A quick note on who wrote this: I'm a shopper based in Korea, and I compiled this post from the official Laneige and Aquaphor pages, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), published reviews and Amazon US listings. This is research, not a hands-on test, so you won't find "I wore it for 30 nights" claims here. Prices were checked on October 28, 2026, and every source is listed at the end.
Which is better for dry winter lips, Laneige or Aquaphor?
Aquaphor is better for lips that are already cracked, peeling or sore, while Laneige is better as a nightly treat for lips that are dry but intact.
The reason is simple. The AAD lists fragrance and flavoring among the ingredients to avoid on chapped lips, because they can irritate damaged skin. Aquaphor Lip Repair is fragrance-free. Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask contains fragrance (parfum) and color additives in every scent we checked.
On the other hand, Laneige wins on experience: it comes in 16 options on the official site, has a glossy finish, and Wirecutter named it the best lip mask out of 18 it tested in its 2026 lip balm guide. So it really depends on what state your lips are in.

What is Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask?
Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask is a thick, scented leave-on lip balm from the Korean brand Laneige, meant to be applied generously before bed.
What the official US site (us.laneige.com) says:
- Price and size: from $24 for 0.7 oz / 20 g, with 16 options (scents and limited editions such as a holiday Gingerbread jar).
- How to use: a generous layer at night; a thin layer in the morning as lip prep.
- Key ingredients named by the brand: coconut oil, murumuru seed butter, shea butter, vitamin C and a "Berry Fruit Complex."
- Brand claims: 12-hour hydration (instrumental test, 33 subjects, one use) and 94% less flaky lips after two weeks (33 subjects). These are the brand's own tests, not independent studies.
- Popularity: Laneige calls itself the #1 lip treatment brand in the US four years in a row (Circana data, Jan 2022 to Dec 2025).
- Formulated without: mineral oil, parabens and lanolin.
On Amazon US, the Berry jar (the original scent) has 4.6 out of 5 stars from 37,756 ratings and ranked #8 in Lip Balms & Moisturizers when we checked.

What is Aquaphor Lip Repair?
Aquaphor Lip Repair is a fragrance-free lip ointment from Beiersdorf (the company behind Eucerin and Nivea), sold in a small squeeze tube for very dry, chapped lips.
- Price and size: $4.33 on Amazon US (list price $4.79) for 0.35 fl oz / 10 mL.
- Ratings: 4.7 out of 5 from 45,525 ratings, with "30K+ bought in past month." The official Aquaphor site shows 4.6 stars from 1,903 reviews.
- Claims on the box: "Immediate Relief" and "For severely dry lips," proven to relieve dryness and soothe chapped, cracked lips. Aquaphor calls itself the #1 dermatologist-recommended lip care brand.
- Free of: fragrance and preservatives (official site), and parabens (Amazon listing).
Don't confuse it with the big jar of Aquaphor Healing Ointment, which is petrolatum-based. The Lip Repair tube is a different formula, and there is also a Lip Repair Stick (2 × 0.17 oz for $6.19) with a waxier, balm-style formula.

How do the ingredients compare?
Both are mostly emollients and waxes with shea butter, but Aquaphor adds skin-soothing actives (panthenol, glycerin, bisabolol) and skips fragrance, while Laneige adds fragrance, dyes and fruit extracts.
Here are the first ingredients of each, which make up most of the formula:
- Laneige (Berry): diisostearyl malate, hydrogenated polyisobutene, a plant-sterol ester, hydrogenated poly(C6-14 olefin), polybutene, microcrystalline wax, then shea butter. Further down: murumuru butter, parfum, coconut oil, colorants (Yellow 6, Red 6, mica, titanium dioxide), vitamin C, and pomegranate, raspberry and grape juice near the end. Skinsort counts 34 ingredients.
- Aquaphor Lip Repair: octyldodecanol, an ester wax, castor seed oil, caprylic/capric triglyceride, glycerin, panthenol, water, shea butter, vitamin E, a vitamin C derivative, bisabolol (from chamomile) and beeswax. That's 19 ingredients on the Amazon list.
Two common myths to clear up:
- "Aquaphor Lip Repair is just Vaseline." Some beauty sites describe it as petrolatum-based, but the ingredient lists on Amazon and the box show no petrolatum. The thick Healing Ointment is the petrolatum product.
- "Laneige has hyaluronic acid." We did not find hyaluronic acid in the official Berry ingredient list.
One more detail: Aquaphor Lip Repair contains beeswax, so it is not vegan. Laneige contains methicone (a silicone), so it's not silicone-free.
How much more does Laneige cost per ounce?
Laneige costs about 2.8x more per ounce than a single Aquaphor tube, and about 4.5x more than the Aquaphor 2-pack deal. Per container, $24 vs $4.33 looks like 5.5x, but the jar holds about twice as much product.
Laneige vs Aquaphor price table (Amazon US, Oct 28, 2026)
| Amazon US listing | Size | Price | $ per oz* | Rating | ASIN |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask, single jar (Matcha Bubble Tea) | 20 g / 0.71 oz | $24.00 | $34.02 | 4.6 (684) | B0F6L69CPF |
| Laneige Berry, single jar | 20 g / 0.71 oz | no featured offer on Oct 28 | n/a | 4.6 (37,756) | B07XXPHQZK |

| Aquaphor Lip Repair Stick, 2-pack | 2 × 0.17 oz | $6.19 (list $8.39) | $18.21 | 4.6 (34,176) | B07SRRLVQ1 |
*Our math: price ÷ size. Prices are as listed on Amazon US on Oct 28, 2026; sellers can vary, so check "Ships from / Sold by" before you buy. Aquaphor tubes are labeled by volume (fl oz) and Laneige by weight (oz), so the ratios are approximate, not exact.

What the numbers tell you:
- Regular prices: $34.02/oz vs $12.37/fl oz is about 2.8x. Even at Aquaphor's list price ($4.79, or $13.69/fl oz), the gap is about 2.5x.
- Deal prices: the Aquaphor 2-pack at $5.24 drops to $7.49/fl oz, which makes Laneige about 4.5x more expensive. That deal may not last.
- Laneige sets can be better value than a single jar: the Berry Duo adds a mini for the same $24, though Amazon doesn't list the mini's size.
- The popular Berry jar had no featured offer on Oct 28, so check that the seller is Amazon.com or the LANEIGE store before buying from a third party.
So "4x the price" is only true on sale days. A fair everyday answer is about 3x.
Which is better for cracked or sensitive lips?
For cracked or sensitive lips, a fragrance-free product like Aquaphor Lip Repair is the better match for what dermatologists recommend.
The AAD's guide to healing dry, chapped lips says to avoid lip products with:
- camphor, eucalyptus or menthol
- fragrance and flavoring
- lanolin, phenol, propyl gallate, salicylic acid, and the sunscreens octinoxate and oxybenzone
And it says these ingredients can help: castor seed oil, ceramides, dimethicone, hemp seed oil, mineral oil, petrolatum, shea butter, and zinc oxide or titanium dioxide (for sun protection).
Aquaphor Lip Repair has castor seed oil and shea butter and none of the "avoid" ingredients. Laneige has shea butter too, and no lanolin, but it does contain fragrance, which is on the avoid list. For very dry lips, the AAD also suggests a thick ointment such as white petroleum jelly, especially at night.
Reviews match this split. A Yahoo Shopping editor (2024) found the Laneige mask sticky and said it did little for her cracked lips, while many Reddit users in r/Sephora and r/SkincareAddiction say plain Aquaphor heals better. Others, like Wirecutter's panel, say Laneige kept their lips soft through winter. Fragrance sensitivity seems to be the main reason opinions differ.
Dermatologist Dr. Jessica Burgy reviews Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask in Berry, including its fragrance and dyes (independent video, not a Laneige ad).
Which works better overnight?
Both are designed to stay on overnight. Laneige is made to feel like a "sleeping mask," while Aquaphor works as a protective seal that you can also use during the day.
- Laneige is applied in a thick layer from a jar. It is glossy and slightly tacky, so it stays on but can feel sticky. Some reviewers say it disappears faster than expected.
- Aquaphor comes out of a tube, so it's more hygienic and easier to carry. It's less glossy and has no scent.
If you plan to use it during the day too, both work as a gloss-like layer, but neither has SPF. The AAD recommends an SPF 30 or higher lip balm when you go outdoors, reapplied every two hours.
Can you use Laneige and Aquaphor together?
Yes. Some people put on a thin layer of Laneige for scent and shine and then seal it with Aquaphor, but it's not necessary.
A simple winter routine based on the AAD tips:
- Day: a fragrance-free balm, plus SPF 30+ lip balm when you're outside.
- Night: a thick layer of ointment (Aquaphor, or petroleum jelly) on cracked lips; Laneige on lips that are only dry.
- Home: run a humidifier in heated rooms and stop licking your lips.
- If lips don't improve in 2 to 3 weeks, see a dermatologist. The AAD notes that persistent dry lips can be a sign of an allergy or another condition.
What should you check before buying?
Check your lips' condition, the fragrance, the seller and the real price per ounce before you buy.
- Condition: cracked, bleeding or stinging lips need healing first. Choose a fragrance-free ointment.
- Fragrance and dyes: every Laneige scent we checked contains fragrance and colorants. Choose Aquaphor if your lips react to them.
- Seller: look for "Sold by Amazon.com" or the brand store. Beauty products from unknown third-party sellers can be old or fake.
- Price per ounce: compare $/oz, not $/container. Laneige sets and Aquaphor multi-packs change the math a lot.
- Jar vs tube: a jar means fingers or a spatula; a tube is cleaner for bags and pockets.
- Sun: neither product has SPF.

What are the limits of this comparison?
- No hands-on test. This post compares official pages, ingredient lists, dermatology guidance and Amazon listings. It doesn't rate texture or scent from personal use.
- Brand claims. Laneige's 12-hour hydration and 94% numbers come from its own small tests (33 people). We found no independent head-to-head study of these two products.
- Size labels differ. Aquaphor uses fluid ounces, Laneige uses weight, and the official Aquaphor site lists 0.34 fl oz while the box says 0.35 fl oz. Our ratios are close estimates.
- Prices move. Amazon prices, deals and availability can change daily. The Berry jar had no featured offer on the day we checked.
Final verdict: is Laneige worth 3x the price of Aquaphor?
For fixing chapped winter lips, no: Aquaphor Lip Repair does the job for about a third of the price per ounce and without fragrance. As a pleasant bedtime ritual for healthy lips, Laneige can be worth it if the scent and shine matter to you.
If you're on a budget or your lips are cracked, buy Aquaphor (the 2-pack if the deal is still on). If you want a gift or a cozy night routine and fragrance doesn't bother you, the Laneige Berry Duo gives you an extra mini for the same $24. And whichever you choose, add sunscreen for your lips when you're outside.
